Theft
Theft is classified as petty theft if the stolen property's value is under $950 and grand theft if it is $950 or more.
Theft occurs when someone unlawfully takes another’s property with the intent to deprive the owner of its value, either permanently or for a significant period.
Petty theft (property under $950) is punishable by up to 6 months in county jail and a $1,000 fine.
If the property is valued under $50, the District Attorney may charge it as a misdemeanor or an infraction with a $250 fine.
Grand theft (property $950 or more) can be charged as a misdemeanor (up to 1 year in county jail) or a felony (up to 3 years in state prison).
